Far from being solitary organisms, trees in forests are connected through underground fungal networks that allow them to share nutrients and even warn each other of potential dangers. Research by forest ecologist Suzanne Simard in Canada has shown that older trees, sometimes called “mother trees,” can supply younger ones with nutrients, especially in times of stress or low light. These findings have challenged traditional views of trees as competitors for sunlight and water. Instead, they show that cooperation plays a key role in forest health.
Trees can also produce chemical signals in response to attacks. For example, when a tree is attacked by insects, it can release airborne chemicals that alert neighboring trees to activate their own defense systems. This form of communication helps the forest as a whole to become more resilient.
Despite these discoveries, there is still skepticism among some scientists. Critics argue that attributing social behavior to trees is anthropomorphizing—projecting human traits onto non-human organisms. Even so, growing evidence supports the idea that trees are more interactive and cooperative than previously thought.
